Signs Someone Stole My Catalytic Converter

If there is one thing that is in demand on the black market it is precious metals. Did you know that the catalytic converter in your vehicle’s exhaust system is made from precious metals? Specifically, when catalytic converters are melted down, criminals can extract rhodium, platinum, and palladium from them. This is why this exhaust system part is stolen from underneath automobiles.

Roaring/Rumbling Engine

We want to assure you that you will realize right away that there is a problem if someone stole your catalytic converter while you were away from your vehicle. When you start the engine, it will roar and rumble much louder than it normally does. If you press down on the accelerator, the engine will get even louder. It will be impossible to ignore the difference in how your engine sounds.

Illuminated CEL

It will also be impossible to ignore the check engine light on your dashboard. Normally, this light turns on briefly and then turns off when you first start your automobile. In this case, the missing catalytic converter will cause the engine control unit to leave the light on. Unfortunately, the only way to get the CEL to turn off is to replace the catalytic converter and repair any exhaust system damage.

Acceleration Trouble

If you decide to drive your automobile despite the noise it is making, you will discover that it also has problems accelerating. Unfortunately, this, too, is a sign that the catalytic converter has been taken. When you press down on the accelerator, the engine will get louder and your vehicle will lurch forward in spurts. This can make driving the automobile difficult if not impossible.

Slow-Speed Problems

Another thing that is going to make driving your vehicle difficult is problems with the engine producing power when you are driving slowly. The engine’s exhaust is not being handled properly because the catalytic converter is missing. Consequently, this can make it difficult for the engine to produce the torque it needs to run smoothly at slower speeds.

Noticeable Exhaust Odors

To be honest, we recommend that you avoid driving your automobile until the catalytic converter is replaced. Because it is missing, the exhaust manifold will force the exhaust into the open air. This means untreated exhaust is surrounding your vehicle. The exhaust can easily come inside of the automobile and make you sick while you are driving.

If you have had the catalytic converter taken from underneath your car, truck, or utility vehicle, call us after you have spoken to the authorities and your insurance company. We can install a new converter.
