Auto Repair: Spark Plugs
Over time, spark plugs can become damaged, causing your car to run poorly. Most cars have four or six cylinders, and each cylinder has one spark plug. Some cars have iridium or platinum tip spark plugs that can last up to 60,000 miles before they need to be replaced. However, most spark plugs need to be replaced every 20,000 to 30,000 miles.
Repairing spark plugs can seem like a daunting task. The most important thing to remember is to be careful not to damage the threads on the spark plug hole. Once the damaged spark plug is removed, you’ll need to take a wire brush and clean out any debris from the hole. Next, use a ratchet and socket to screw in the new spark plug. Finally, hand-tighten the spark plug until it’s snug, being careful not to over-tighten and damage the threads.
Here is a step-by-step guide to replacing your car’s spark plugs:
- Locate the spark plug wires and unscrew them from the spark plugs. If you are having trouble finding the spark plugs, consult the owner’s manual for your vehicle.
- Using a ratchet or socket wrench, loosen the spark plug and remove it from the cylinder.
- Inspect the spark plug for signs of wear or damage. If the electrode is burned or eroded (if it’s black or oily) it will need to be replaced with a new plug.
- Finally, you’ll need to install the new spark plug in the cylinder and hand-tighten it until it is snug. Do not over-tighten the spark plug, as this can damage the threads in the cylinder head. Before installing the new plug, apply a small amount of anti-seize compound to the threads. This will help to prevent corrosion and make it easier to remove the plug in the future. Screw in the new plug by hand, then use the wrench to tighten it an additional quarter turn. Start up your engine once it is attached.
Over time, car spark plugs can become damaged or corroded, causing engine misfires and decreased performance. If you suspect that your spark plugs may be to blame, it’s important to know how to properly check and replace them. With fresh spark plugs, you should notice an improvement in engine performance right away. You may need a little help and practice, but eventually you will be able to easily repair your car’s spark plugs and keep your engine running smoothly.
